LOADSTAR Version by Bob Markland
Text by Fender Tucker
Morse Code? In 1998? Yes, it seems like an anachronism to be learning
Morse Code in this day of e-mail and internet, but let's not forget that
according to "Independence Day" the telegraphers saved the earth from evil
aliens. And according to a new TV sitcom that I'll probably never watch,
even Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, enjoyed an
occasional bout of telegraph sex with an intern or two in his time.
This program will teach you Morse Code and allow you to practice your
taps, and even test yourself. We don't know who wrote the original PD
program from which it is taken, but Bob Markland spiffied it up for
LOADSTAR 128. There are four options on the menu:
CODE CHART
----------
This shows you the long-short codes for the alphabetic and numeric
characters as well as punctuation and other important codes like WAIT, END
OF MESSAGE, etc. Of course you don't have to memorize the charts right
away, but if you ever plan to be a telegrapher, amateur or professional,
you'll need to know them by heart.
1. Next - Takes you to the punctuation/message chart
2. Review - Displays and sounds the codes for all characters
3. Takes you back to the Main Menu
RECEIVING
---------
Here is where you test yourself on recognizing incoming messages. You
may select:
1. Random Characters - what it says
2. Library message - messages built into the program
3. Input Message - enter in a word, sentence or phrase to see/hear
what it sounds/looks like sent back to you
4. Takes you back to the Main Menu
SENDING
-------
This is simple; just start tapping any key (except M) and the program
will display what you're tapping. Press the M key to return to the Main
Menu.
That's all there is to MORSE CODE. Be sure to have your monitor's
volume turned up because the tone of the taps is essential to the
telegrapher's art. Everyone should know how to tap SOS, the international
mayday code. Short-short-short-long-long-long-short-short-short. You never
know...
